How Does CompTIA A+ Stack Up to its Competitors?

Budding IT professionals looking to get their foot in the door may also be looking at the value of other IT certifications like Microsoft MCSA, Microsoft MTA Infrast and Cisco CCENT. The chart below compares these partner certifications to CompTIA A+.

The biggest difference amongst these four is that CompTIA A+ is the only vendor-neutral entry-level IT certification, meaning the skills you learn when studying for CompTIA A+ are not directly associated with specific IT vendors. Instead, you are developing knowledge and skills that are universally applicable no matter what equipment you’re working on.

The CompTIA Tech Career Academy trains students who have little-to-no information technology experience and gives them the skills to launch an IT career. The program offers online classes and even connects its graduates to potential employers once they’ve completed their training. Wood was one of CompTIA Tech Career Academy’s first fully remote students, and the program changed his life.

“This pandemic for me went by super-fast,” he said. “I've consistently been doing something pretty much since it started, so yeah, it’s been a blessing in disguise.”

behind that are adaptability and accessibility

ught of on the same level as a system or data moving to the cloud. You need to make sure you aren’t tackling one side of a project by saying, we can access it remotely, but now we're left with a vulnerability.

Seth: What considerations need to go into IT support and the help desk if you can’t count on people being in an office?

Robert: It is a potential endless support situation for IT staff if they are troubleshooting every person’s home network. They are typically insecure, you don't know who's on it, or how far away from wireless the worker is. There's an infinite number of problems that can arise. There must be clear lines of what is being supported by IT staff, and what is not.

Edgar: We need to make sure people are funneling all requests to a help desk, especially when people are working from home. It seems easy to pick up the phone or send a quick message, but that can overwhelm the IT staff.

Seth: Moving forward, what recommendations do you have for collaborating with business leads so they understand how to make tradeoffs and enable productivity?

Robert: First, as an IT person, analyze the tools. Do you have collaboration tools in place? Then, go to other departments, and ask them if they are having challenges on any platforms. Do basic intelligence gathering. Pull reports from the help desk and if you see an increase a certain request, then maybe it's time to put a training in place to educate staff. If you get that out there, those help desk tickets could disappear or you get in front of potential issues in a proactive manner.

Insider Threats cyber security

Insider threats occur when employees expose sensitive corporate data either intentionally or unintentionally. With the stress levels brought about by COVID-19 and its effects on most employees’ finances, most people could be looking for additional income sources. Employees who have had to take a pay cut or were laid off might be disgruntled to the point of selling your data.

In other cases, the lack of a nearby IT department to approach security concerns also increases the chances that employees will make costly mistakes. While IT departments might be reached through a phone call, there are instances where the responsible people might be out of reach. Having employees sign, NDAs could help mitigate common insider threats from disgruntled staff members. As for common security errors employees can commit, solving them can be as easy as educating employees and ramping up your IT team’s availability.

Businesses that want to survive through the pandemic will need to find ways to deal with the threats above. One great way to start is by educating employees on cybersecurity best practices. Business leaders will also need to continually monitor their businesses to identify security loopholes that pose the most significant threats.

CompTIA Continuing Education (CE) program

For a certified CompTIA® individual, CompTIA® offers several ways to maintain the professional certification that you’ve worked so hard for. This is done through the CompTIA® Continuing Education (CE) program.
Two Options
Instead of having you retake your exam every 3 years, CompTIA® has two main options to renew your certification for another full cycle: CompTIA® CertMaster courses and CompTIA® Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

CompTIA® CertMaster courses are a new way to recertify, and they consist of an online course that maps to several of the current exam objectives. These courses are currently offered for CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, and CompTIA Security+ certification holders. A cost is associated with each course and, upon finishing the course, CompTIA® will renew your certification for another full 3-year cycle.

CompTIA® CEUs are a method of using your real-world, professional experience to gain units toward renewing your certification. Each certification is different and requires a different number of CompTIA® CEUs to fulfill the renewal requirements. To qualify, these units need to be earned during the 3 years that you hold the certification, be relevant to the objectives of the exam (at least 50% of content), and be properly documented to CompTIA® standards. There are several ways to earn these units, including but not limited to: passing CompTIA® exams, passing other industry exams (Cisco®, Microsoft®, etc.), acquiring work experience, attending webinars or conferences, and participating in CompTIA®’s special workshops.

How to succeed at the A+ exams

This is the first step. The exam objectives for CompTIA A+ can be found here. A+ requires candidates to pass two exams, 220-1001 (Core 1) and 220-1002 (Core 2). Download the objectives for the test(s) you need. Read them completely before you begin, and you will get substantial insight to guide your effort.

When you review the Objectives, you’ll see that they are arranged by main domains that contain sub-domains and topics. They also show what percentage of the examination each domain represents. Here are the 220-1002 Core 2 Main Domains.

You can see four main domains. Within each domain are subdomains that contain the topic points. Use the topics to target your studies. The Core 2 objectives alone are 19 pages long It is a good idea to print these for quick reference since there are over 30 sub-objectives that are all loaded with topics. Here’s a small chunk of the Core 2 Objective 1.0 Operating Systems. You will see the sub-domains shown here are numbered as 1.1,1.2,1.3 etc… This is where you should concentrate. The objectives are written in a manner that provides some perspective as to what they’re looking for.

Now on to accuracy. Let’s say a certification has a grade range of 100 to 900 with a passing score of 700 and our brain dump author scores 750. They will sit down and crank out as much as they can remember questions and answers. The Problem? Our dump expert answered over 20% of their questions incorrectly. Compound this with the sad fact that those wrong questions will be the ones they remember because they felt harder than the others. And there’s your brain dump… Beware!

some current cloud security issues

People, or shall we say the lack of people is a major concern for the cloud as well. In order to provide more security and better connections, there must be the (wo)manpower to do so. The current job climate for cyber security professionals is not very promising. An article by the Commercial Integrator titled, “The Cybersecurity Workforce Gap Should Concern Everyone – Including AV Integrators,” included a recent study from Cyberseek which stated that the United States has about 500,000 cyber security job vacancies. (Comeau) The same article included information from an (ISC)2 report that stated that the worldwide gap in cyber security professionals is nearing 4 million. (Comeau) There are programs being developed to help bridge the gap. For example, IBM and NIST are both privy to the shortage of cyber professionals and have educational trainings and plans they will use to help educate more people looking to join the field. (Comeau) Despite these efforts, the lack of qualified job candidates remains. Not only is there a shortage of women and minorities in the field, but there is also a shortage of educators certified to train any perspective students. (Comeau)

The reality is that the cloud is everywhere. Cloud services make life a lot easier but there are also setbacks to living with our heads in the cloud. Can you think of more cloud service issues businesses are currently facing? Which problems do you think are the most challenging?.

Connection issues are on the rise with the use of multi-cloud deployments. According to the results of a survey conducted by Propeller Insights, IT leaders believe the top benefits of multi-cloud deployments include “Maximizing availability and reliability, meeting regulatory and compliance requirements, and leveraging best-of-breed services from each provider” (Hainzinger} At the same time, IT leaders agreed that the biggest challenges for multi-cloud deployment are, “Secure and reliable connectivity between providers, different support and consulting processes, and different platform services” (Hainzinger) The highest rated issue, with 60 percent of the votes, was the need for secure and reliable connections between providers.

Networking and Cloud Concepts Added

Companies have been challenged to meet the demands of a growing set of standards and regulations with which they must comply. Knowledge of operational procedures is required to meet that demand, and it is covered on the new exam. Expect questions about documentation, change management, and disaster recovery. Another welcome addition is scripting, a key skill for operational procedures and very useful across a wide variety of IT responsibilities.

Other additions include more detailed SOHO router/firewall settings, wireless mesh network, radio frequency identification, and wireless protocols Zigbee and Z-wave.
So, What Stays the Same?

While a lot has changed, some of the best features of CompTIA exams remain. The exam remains vendor-neutral. Questions are written to emphasize problem-solving skills. Display your Prowess in IT Security

You know data security is important. It’s one of IT’s most rapidly growing subfields, meaning that even people who aren’t actively involved with fighting off incursions have to know something about preventing them.

Firms want to hire people who can help them create invulnerable IT services. While this probably isn’t realistically possible, you can nonetheless do your part by earning your CompTIA® Security+ Certification. With huge organizations like IBM, Ricoh, Lockheed Martin, General Mills and the U.S. Department of Defense regularly employing people who have this certification, you’ll also be making yourself more hirable.

One of the nice things about CompTIA Security+ training programs is that the certification allows you to demonstrate your mastery of six different specializations. These include Network Security, Compliance and Operational Security, Threats and Vulnerabilities, Application, Data and Host Security, Access Control and Identity Management, and Cryptography.

Using CompTIA training to enhance essential skills now will make it easier for you to transition as needed in the future. You can expand your level of knowledge across different areas making your career opportunities greater as well.

The CompTIA Security+ test is usually about 100 questions long. It includes multiple-choice questions and some performance-based problems. Although you may be apprehensive about the latter, many candidates find that performance-based simulation evaluations give them a chance to demonstrate the skills they’re confident in. These simulations may also be better at helping you deal with real-world problems you encounter in the workplace later on.

Jobs Will One Get After Completing CompTIA CySA+

Before answering the question, make sure you go through it twice. You need to ensure you give sufficient time to each question so that you won’t take too much time on other CompTIA CS0-002 questions and have a lack of time for some. If you face a difficult question, you can skip it then get back to it afterward. Trying to find out the answer to a tough question might take time, which will consume the time for the other questions. Also, at the end of your exam, be sure you’ve answered all the exam questions.
7. Take Time to Rest During Your Studies

Your brain can only soak up so much information. Constant learning without breaks results in content saturation and exhaustion. This would be negative to your CompTIA CS0-002 exam preparation. Take breaks in-between your revision to allow you to refresh. Taking small breaks also allows the content you’ve read to be absorbed by your mind. Have a sound sleep at night before the exam day to ace the test with a refreshing mind.

Conclusion

While CompTIA CySA+ certification demands significant time, work experience, and economic investment, it will help you distinguish from other job applicants. CompTIA certification affects the hiring manager’s preference for whether or not you get a cybersecurity job.
